Learn how to use your sewing machine to make simple but stunning garments.  This practical course will teach you how to get the most from commercial patterns as you learn about seam allowances, hems, zips, button holes and more.  Combine all your new skills to create a project to be proud of.  Expert tuition from a professional seamstress.  Make your sewing machine come alive! You will need to bring your own machine (please check beforehand that it works well!). The first project pattern will be advised in advance to enable you to purchase it and your chosen fabric and notions in readiness.

HAND BUILT CERAMICS (CLAY)                                                                             Tutor: Emma Jayne Robertson

Working with local ceramicist Emma Jayne Robertson, over a period of 10 weeks, you will explore a range of clay hand building techniques, including slab and coil building. You will make a variety of items to practice these techniques and then refine your work with fettling and tidying up, exploring decoration using underglaze paints.  After half term you will design and make your own projects. (Initial 10kg of clay, glazes and kiln firing are included in the cost.)

Could art buy you a place in heaven?  Could it express your deepest longings without giving away your secrets?  Could it assuage your fears facing the afterlife?  This course will explore the concerns of the Medieval mind through the art of the period.  We will examine themes such as love, birth, piety, devotion, sex and of course death through a range of artistic expression including: manuscripts, sculpture, paintings and frescoes.  We will also consult primary sources and there will be time for class discussion.  No previous art historical study is necessary but this course is an ideal follow on from “Introducing Medieval Manuscripts”

Six centuries in six weeks! From Wehha to Wuffa to Tytila, Raedwald, Edmund and Harold – how was our lovely county not only ruled but experienced by our ancestors?  From waving goodbye to the Romans in 410CE to the entry of the Normans in 1066CE Suffolk witnessed dynamic shifts including: religious upheaval, violent attacks from northern invaders to subordination under invaders from the south.  On the course you will be introduced to these characters and the lives of their subjects.  We will explore primary sources to develop understanding of the period and encourage discussion.  No previous historical study is necessary
