This practically oriented course looks at the options for buying antiques & vintage items from various markets including auctions, antique centres and online, identifying the main advantages and disadvantages of each. We will explore the main historical periods of such items, learning about some of the craftsmen, designers and manufacturers associated with them. We will attempt to tackle the tricky question of how to assess their value in the different markets, and therefore calculate the right price at which to buy them to maximise the potential profits to be made. We consider the pros and cons of buying and selling at auction and evaluate the associated costs, as well as learning about the financial investment, practical resources and techniques needed for selling successfully online. There will be a visit to an antique centre towards the end of the course.
